News broke this week that Resident Evil writer/director/producer extraordinaire Paul W.S. Anderson wouldn’t be opposed to making a fourth chapter in the film series. According to MTV’s Multiplayer blog, he’s been in talks with Sony about the possibility of making zombie magic happen yet again.
From the post:
As something of a (very) reluctant fan of the series (check out my lame game movie nights impressions), I’ve got to say my expectations are low. This early time in a film’s development/preproduction is incredibly sensitive and it’s highly likely that it won’t even get made. However, if Anderson does find the right story (Kotaku’s Leigh Alexander mentioned a Code: Veronica redux) and the pieces do fall together, I have a few suggestions for the filmmakers, should they ever happen upon this humble column.
Make sure Milla Jovovich is a big part of the film-
I don’t think I’m overstating the case by saying she absolutely owns the role of Alice and pretty much makes the cheesy flicks worth watching. She has a sort of tough-chick badass demeanor and such an over-the-top approach to the role that it keeps the cheesiness from getting boring. An RE without her is an RE I don’t want to see.
Stop putting those awful “it gets quiet, then something jumps” moments in the movie
Seriously, zombies are creepy enough without the oldest trick in the horror film book popping up – literally. It cheapens the whole thing, and it annoys the battle-scarred gamers who wish they could bring sawed-off shotguns to the movie theater.
Keep the humor
The best part of the existing three films is the fact that none of them are terribly serious. From the amazing Grand Theft Auto reference in the second film, to Michelle Rodriguez’s quickly zombifying character claims of “when we get out of here, I’m going to get laid” and promptly throwing up, most of the fun is in the sheer dumb humor.
There you have it. While I’m not sure the world exactly needs another Resident Evil flick, should Anderson stick to the series’ strengths, it’ll be worth checking out. Possibly only on video.
