Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII - a closer look at Zack’s limit break

Zack uses Octaslash against an opponent

So if you’re playing Crisis Core, you’ve probably become acquainted with the unique manner in which limit breaks are triggered. Ah, the fickle DMW (digital mind wave) system - I alternate between loving and cursing its very existence. At times it can be a blessing and a curse.

While the boosts it provides are a nice tidbit, the DMW is at its best when it allows Zack to perform limit breaks. All are definitely useful, but there are some you pray hit more than others. So let’s look at Zack’s various limit breaks and rank them according to usefulness.

  1. Cissnei - Lucky Stars Cissnei says “Do it Zack.” He then does a little dance/jog in place thing while stars surround him. After this all of his attacks against opponents are critical for a short period. Also I’ve noticed that it sends the DMV into a “Heavenly” state. This limit comes incredibly handy in boss fights and on “Very Hard” missions, as your DMW will hit more often and you’ll do a lot more damage.
  2. Aerith - Healing Wave Aerith tells Zack, “Good luck.” Zack puts down his sword and stands in a patch of flowers. Zack’s hit points are restored and he becomes temporarily invincible. Once again, it’s best when it hits during boss battles. The healing is a nice touch, but the invincibility is really what makes this limit worthwhile.
  3. Angeal - Rush Assault Angeal declares, “Show me your honor.” Zack then deals physical attacks to between two and three of his opponents. Occasionally this limit will cause the DMV to enter a high or sky high state. I love when this hits right when Zack gets into a battle with three or more opponents. At the right level it can easily take out any opponent it hits.
  4. Tseng - Air Strike Tseng asks, “Is this the end?” Zack screams back, “I’m trying! I’m trying!” The Turks helicopter then appears and shouts bullets and missiles at all of Zack’s opponents. I’ve found it is slightly less powerful than the Rush Strike, but since it hits every single enemy that isn’t as big an issue.
  5. Sephiroth - Octaslash Sephiroth tells Zack “Concentrate.” Zack then performs multiple physical attacks on a single opponent. It upsets me when I see this comes up in a regular conflict - it’s such a waste. It is a phenomenal attack which does a great chunk of damage, but really is best for single boss opponents.
  6. Shadowed Picture - Chain Slash Zack performs a physical attack on one of his opponents, slashing the opponent repeatedly. Its okay, but nothing special. Handy, but not really flashy or impressive.

There are two other DMW limit breaks, however they come in later in the game and I haven’t reached that point. Currently I’ve only invested 15 hours in the title, so I haven’t met the requirements to have Cloud or Genesis appear in Zack’s DMW. I can’t officially rank them, but I can provide information as to what they do.

  • Cloud - Meteor Shots Zack runs up to the field, waving his sword and jumps up into the air. He swings his sword down, raining meteors down on all opponents below him. Footage of the attack from the Japanese version of the game shows that it leaves opponents decimated.
  • Genesis - Apocalypse Zack rises up in the air. A glowing red symbol appears on the ground under the enemy. Zack’s left hand glows, and he then shoots a magical blast down at the opponent. It looks impressive.
