Creepy games for Halloween

by Jeremy Hill on Oct 19, 2008 at 12:08 PM

HalloweenHalloween is almost here and along with it comes scares of epic proportions. This year, why not get all that trick or treating done early so you can go home and get some serious gaming done? It just so happens that some good games are out in October that could prove to be some of the scariest games of the year. We recommend building up a strong bladder before attempting to tackle this list. Also, it doesn’t count unless you seal yourself in a dark room, turn on the surround sound, and turn the cell phone off. You need the feeling of complete isolation for the full effect to kick in.

Without further adieu, steer your eyes to some of the scariest games of October.
Dead Space

Dead Space

Platform: PS3, Xbox 360
Rating: Mature
Price: $59.99

The picture says it all. In Dead Space you play as Issac Clarke, who really is your average Joe with futuristic mining tools. You board the USG Ishimura to respond to cryptic messages left by the ship’s crew. Dead Space takes the survival horror genre to the next level by getting rid of the traditional HUD. Every menu you see in the game is brought up in holographic form in front of Issac. It’s sort of like what Tom Cruise was working with in Minority Report. The Necromorphs you encounter in the game are the main enemies. Dismembering these abominations is key to coming out alive. Incidentally Dead Space features some of the coolest death scenes I’ve seen in a while.

Silent Hill Homecoming

Silent Hill Homecoming

Platform: PS3, Xbox 360, PC
Rating: Mature
Price: $59.99

Silent Hill Homecoming came out in late September, 2008, and takes the series in a different direction. Instead of playing as a regular person who’s probably never fought a day in their lives, you play as a special forces soldier named Alex Shepard. Alex has experience working with weapons which makes players feel more confident when taking on the monsters. The game’s plot involves Alex searching for his brother Josh. Naturally this is when everything falls apart and the real fun begins.

BioShock

BioShock

Platform: PS3, Xbox 360, PC
Rating: Mature
Price: $19.99- $59.99

BioShock puts us in the shoes of Jack in the underwater city known as Rapture. The residents there used to live in harmony free of an oppressive government until an uprising threw the city into civil war. The results of the war left the remaining residents, known as Splicers, psychotic and homicidal as they rummage through the remains of Rapture. BioShock was first made available on the Xbox 360 and was ported over to the PS3 for a October 21, 2008 release.

Theresia

Theresia

Platform: DS
Rating: Mature
Price: $29.99

This game is bringing some survival horror love to the Nintendo DS. You play as a girl with who has no memory of who she is, and a doctor who created medicine to fight high fevers in an orphanage. The game is based around finding clues and combining items to escape from various mazes the characters have been unwillingly thrown into. The horror comes from uncovering the individual stories of the characters.
