Couple divorces over Second Life affair

Second Life
If you ever thought that playing a video game couldn’t destroy your marriage, think again. This case doesn’t involve playing a game so much that the wife and kids are ruthlessly neglected, it’s about a man who cheated on his wife in Second Life.

Amy Taylor has filed a divorce from her husband after catching him having sex with a virtual woman in the virtual online reality sim, Second Life. (I didn’t know you could even do that in Second Life.)

According to Tech Radar, Taylor met her husband David Pollard in 2003 in a chat room. They met, got married, kept their computers plugged in and will eventually divorce.

Taylor described her reaction to catching her soon-to-be ex-husband’s virtual infidelity by saying, “I went mad - I was so hurt. I just couldn’t believe what he’d done. I looked at the computer screen and could see his character having sex with a female character. It’s cheating as far as I’m concerned. But he didn’t see it as a problem, and couldn’t see why I was so upset. He said I was just making a big fuss, and tried to make out it was my fault for not giving him enough attention.”

They made up despite all this until Taylor caught her husband cuddling with another Second Life woman yet again. He shut off the computer to cover his tracks but the damage had already been done by then. Pollard later told his wife he was secretly talking to a woman player in America for a couple weeks and suggested they shouldn’t have gotten married. Taylor went on to file for divorce the following day.

The solicitor handling the case said this was the second case she had in one week involving divorces stemming from Second Life. This story does have a happy ending because Taylor has found a new love interest while playing World of Warcraft.

The line between video games and reality has just gotten a whole lot blurrier.
