Konami announced today that it plans to release Contra 4 (CONTRA FRIGGIN’ 4!) for the Nintendo DS later in 2007.

The game, currently being developed by WayForward Technologies, will be set two years after the events in Contra III: The Alien Wars.

C4 is being released to help celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Contra franchise. It will be another 2D sidescroller that utilizes both of the DS’s screens and will include a multiplayer mode.

From the press release:

“A first for the series, Contra 4 introduces a grappling hook accessory that lets players grab onto elements of the environment directly above them. Whether using it to avoid oncoming dangers or attack from a strategic vantage point, the grappling hook allows for new combat situations and dramatic set pieces that underscore the game’s adrenaline-soaked pedigree.”

The name Contra 4 is still a “working title,”  which may indicate they’ll toss on a lengthier description. How about Contra IV: Kickin’ Ass for Hours on End or, more simply, CONTRA FRIGGIN’ 4!
