Comic Con 2008: Videogame wrapup

by Jeremy Hill on Jul 29, 2008 at 07:34 AM

Comic-ConNow that Comic-Con 2008 is behind us it’s time to for a quick recap of the games that was shown there. Just about any game-based on comic books had a huge presence at this years show. We learned some new things about DC Universe Online and Street Fighter IV.

There’s plenty more games to talk about so let’s get right into it. Here are the videogame highlights form Comic-Con 2008:

  • Star Wars: The Force Unleashed puts players into the role of Darth Vader’s secret apprentice named Starkiller. The game takes place between episodes III and IV and will also feature a graphic novel that will be release in mid August. The Force Unleashed will be released in America for the PS2, PS3, PSP, Xbox 360, and DS on September 16, 2008. Australian and European territories will get the game a couple days later.
  • Street Fighter IV is the latest game in the series. Street Fighter IV takes on a 2.5D, cell shaded art style. This games controls most closely resemble the Street Fighter II scheme. We will see the return of super moves and be introduced to ultra moves. Ultra moves are a more powerful version of super moves. When you execute them the camera will move closely to the action to produce a cinematic feel. Many familiar faces will return to the game along with new characters. Capcom says there won’t be any difference in characters between the consoles.
  • Bionic Commando Rearmed is a remake of the classic NES title. This game will be downloadable on Xbox Live, Playstation network and PC. It follows the same storyline as the original but Capcom has added some new weapons, visuals, and a multiplayer mode. This game will be released on August 13 on Xbox Live and August 14 on PSN. It’ll set us back 800 Microsoft points or $9.99 for the Playstation version.
  • Dark Void was playable at the show even though the game is probably a year away from being released. Dark Void reminds me Lost Planet without all the snow. One of the latest trailers of the game shows a lot of large robot creatures surrounding a base of some sort. The main character will sport a jetpack that will be used strategically in combat. Most promising is the addition of a vertical cover system. That sounds interesting.
  • Dead Space is looking very promising. This sci-fi horror game puts us in the boots of a space engineer that must use futuristic mining tools to fight off creatures called Necromorphs. The game focuses heavily of dismembering enemies. Some creatures can only be defeated after you severed parts of their anatomy. Dead Space brings in a zero gravity gameplay element that helps you solve puzzles. Your enemies can use that to their advantage though. This game is will make player keep their wits intact.
  • Spore was shown in abundance on the floor and during Will Wright’s keynote speech. That creature/civilization game continues to impress.
  • Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe drew some of the biggest crowds. Midway announced some new characters for the game. The Green Lantern, Jax, Kitana, and The Joker will all make an appearance. A new video featuring Superman vs. Scorpion was demonstrated with Ed Boon as the narrator. Superman can be hurt by Scorpion’s spear and other attacks because of his weakness to magic and kryptonite. The full story as to why the superheroes are weakened will be explained in the games story.
  • DC Universe Online live gameplay showed a character that could run up walls and another that carried guns. They went around saving infected citizens while fighting off villains like Lex Luthor and Bizarro alongside other heroes. The demonstrations showed a lot of car smashing. One car was even stuck into the side of a building.
