Circuity City closing in US, liquidation sales imminent

by Jeremy Hill on Jan 18, 2009 at 10:20 AM

Circuit City

It’s all over now folks. The downhill roller coaster ride that Circuit City has been on since filing for bankruptcy in November 2008 has finally come to an end. The Associated Press is reporting the retailer will liquidate the remaining 567 stores in the United States after failing to find a buyer for the company. An estimated 30,000 employees are expected to be let go. It is unclear what will happen to Circuit City stores in Canada.

Shareholders in the company will probably lose their investments in this worst case scenario. We should expect to see some price drops on Circuit City’s products in the near future. Circuit City may dish out refunds for pre-ordered games that won’t be released before the stores close. It’s a good idea to try to get your money back now because once liquidation begins all sales may become final. Also if you’ve purchased an extended warranty from Circuit City recently, you may be in luck. According to the Better Business Bureau via Yahoo! Tech, if a retailer goes out of business the consumer can probably rely on the manufacturers warranty. If the manufacturer goes out of business you could rely on the retailers warranty.
