Ah Nexon - just when I’m starting to get weaned off of Mabinogi by some other game, or due to just general boredom, you lure me back in with shiny new features or items. The holiday season has come to the free-to-play MMO, and it seems like there’s a Christmas spirit in the air. Aside from some spiffy general updates to the game, like the ability to own castles and houses, gestures for paying players, party boards, guild battles, a postal system and some guild updates, there are also some limited, special Christmas and wintery events, items and pets.

First of all, the events - frankly, there’s a staggering amount. Its a good thing people will be getting some days off soon, because they’ll need the spare time to take advantage of these new quests. The first event is Santa’s Requests, and it lasts from now (December 18, 2008) until December 28, 2008. Five Santas are scattered throughout Mabinogi, and they have some serious issues. If you help them out, you’ll get socks and cards you can trade in for gifts. A GM Housing sale is also being held from December 19 to January 6, 2009, so if you’re looking for a cheap home with low taxes, stop by the residential areas in Sen Mag and Dugald during this time.

On December 22 and 23, you can send Mabinogi holiday wishes to the GMs iceglitter, Boogeyman and LAMBCOOK, and hope that you’ll be one of the 27 lucky winners picked (each GM picks three people from each of the three servers) to have your wish come true. You can also get your fortune told between Dec 29 and January 6 in the Dunbarton Library, see New Years Fireworks at 12am PST on January 1, 2009, or participate in the Mabinogi Letter Collection from January 1 through 21, 2009 to get gift certificates you can trade for rare items.

As for the limited edition, cash shop items - I’d start asking for a Nexon Cash card for Christmas. There is a limited edition Winter Character card for 9,500 NX/$9.50, that offers all the premium character options with a special outfit. (It’s adorable - I bought one.) There’s also a limited edition Holiday Mini Bear pet for 7,800NX/$7.80, which is basically a mini bear, only white with a festive hat. The official press release also mentions that the unicorn pet will be available for the holidays, but it isn’t showing up in the shop yet. The special character card and pet are both limited, and the unicorn, once released, may be limited as well. So you should probably buy one sooner, rather than later, if you’re interested.
