CES 2010: Recap of Sony’s notable game-related announcements (updated)

by PJ Hruschak on Jan 7, 2010 at 12:42 AM

Sony LogoThere were plenty of game-related goodies peppered throughout Sony’s CES 2010 press conference this week (January 6, 2010).

Here’s a quick look at the the gaming goodness from the conference.

  • We saw clips from God of War 3, Gran Turismo 5 and Heavy Rain during the conference.
  • Sony handed out 3D glasses at the press conference and then delved into 3D tech. Sony is launching “3D World” which includes a 3D TV channel in 2011 called Discovery Sony IMAX 3D. There are also agreements with ESPN, CBS and Discovery and the Sony feature film division is working on 3D movies. The biggie here is that the PS3 will be upgraded to play 3D Blu-ray movies (and Sony will be selling 3D Blu-ray players, of course). Firmware released later this year (2010) promises to add 3D Stereoscopic Gaming functionality to the PS3. We can assume that 3D Blu-ray games are not far behind.
  • New Bravia TVs were on display, coming out march 2010 and preorders now able to be made.
  • Sony wants to “leverage the PSN [Playstation network] platform” will expand beyond the PS3 and PSP. A single PSN ID will be used across multiple platforms and devices including internet-connected Bravia TVs, Blu-ray players, VAIOs and Windows PCs. You can bet phones are included in there.
  • Premium video service (PSN Video Store?) will be launched February 2010 on PSN and will be the first element of the PSN expansion.
  • Sony has launched a new company called Sony Network Entertainment which will help to develop and promote cross-platform PSN.

Also, according a press release sent by Sony during the conference, watch for the “make.believe” (as in “make DOT believe”) marketing to start any day now as that is what Sony is planning to use to promote what it calls a “total entertainment experience.” In a nutshell, Sony is putting all the content it can on all of its products and making them interact with each other. Sony also plans to promote make.believe in PlayStation Home, through the PlayStation Network and at various retail outlets. (Copy editors across the US just groaned in grand annoyance at the thought of having to leave “make.believe” lowercase).
