In the later portion of 2007, a British study had rebuffed the Wii as a fitness solution and found that Wii gaming sessions can’t actually replace physical exercise. Now, on the other side of the Atlantic, Canadian students have seconded that opinion. Twenty-eight students at the Halifax-based Dalhousie University put the Wii to the test by comparing it with other generic exercises.
The students spent 30 minutes each day playing Wii Boxing, walking through the park and boxercising. They kept note of their heart-rates during each of the activities, and also opined on how difficult each of the activities felt. They found the Wii trailed the conventional exercises as a cardiovascular workout. However, as a consolation, the Wii did earn bit of their respect for getting gamers off the couch.
Just for our academic readers, and for the record, boxercise was the most energetic among the three activities. I believe the incessant joy and happiness that the Wii brings to millions around the world is as precious as physical well being, so the study really shouldn’t bother Wii gamers much – there are enough excuses to play the Wii.
