Brothers in Arms: Hell’s Highway takes characters to the next level

I recently played the Tomb Raider Anniversary and I was surprised at a cutscene. It is when Lara Croft kills someone in self-defense and then you see a look of guilt on her face. I have no idea if this scene was in the original game produced 10 years ago but, if it was, then I can see why Lara Croft became so popular. It wasn’t her looks but her character.
Videogame characters are starting to become as lovable and relate-able as characters from movies and television. Ubisoft, for example, is taking it to the next level with the upcoming squad-based first-person shooter, Brothers in Arms: Hell’s Highway, as the latest video below demonstrates (video contains some adult language).
The video shows how much the creators got into the characters of the game, even basing them on real soldiers. Although the names have been changed, they went into great detail with subtle personality characterizations of these men. For example, one of them has named his bazooka Stella and treats it like his girlfriend. The character drama appears to have followed the Saving Private Ryan rules of drama.
If this the beginning of videogames being appreciated as a dramatic art form like cinema, it is a long time coming. I guess we will see in late September 2008, after the game is released.
Brothers in Arms: Hell’s Highway will be available for Playstation 3, Xbox 360 and PC (Windows) when released on September 12, 2008.
