Blu-ray Update: X-Men trilogy, Watchmen tie-in and digital comic coming March 2009

by Christopher Buckner on Feb 24, 2009 at 10:22 PM

Tales of the Black FreighterFans of the upcoming Watchmen, the motion picture based on the groundbreaking graphic novel of the same name, will have a lot more to look forward to come March 24, 2009, with the DVD and Blu-ray release of, Watchmen: Tales of the Black Freighter.

Being released as an animated movie, Watchmen: Tales of the Black Freighter is based on the story-within-a-story concept featured in the original Watchmen 12-issue miniseries published by DC Comics back in 1986.

Black Freighter focuses on a marooned sailor that is cast adrift at sea as he struggles to make his way home to warn its inhabitants of the coming Black Freighter, a murderous pirate ship that sacks and destroys anything in its wake.

From the first look of the DVD, the film seems to be as dark and gritty as the actual story that was seen in the pages of the overall larger story arch in the original Watchmen comics.

The voice role for the marooned sailor will be done by Gerard Butler, who previously worked with Watchmen director Zack Snyder in the blockbuster hit ‘300’ back in 2007.

The DVD will set you back $27.95, while the Blu-ray will cost $35.99.

Both will be available on March 24, 2009, three weeks after Watchmen hits theaters on March 6, 2009.

And for those of you, who are unfamiliar with The Tales of the Black Freighter, or Watchmen for that matter, be sure to check out the Watchmen: The Complete Motion Comic, which is a two-disc collection of the original twelve issues of the Watchmen comic book series.

This collection has limited animation clips, sound and voice work to string together the classic graphic novel together for new or old fans alike.

Running five hours long, Watchmen: The Complete Motion Comic retails for $29.98.

x-men trilogy coming to blu-rayAlso, hot on the heels of the upcoming summer film X-Men Origins: Wolverine, the X-Men Trilogy will finally be released on Blu-ray April 21, 2009, with loads of special features that might just make the retail price of $79.99 worth it. But hey, what self-proclaimed comic nerd is going to pass up this set?

As millions of movie goers learned over the course of the three films, X-Men, X2: X-Men United and X3: The Last Stand, the X-Men exist in a world where ordinary men and women are born with uncanny powers that set them apart from the rest of the human race.

Of these mutants, some fight for good, others fight for evil while most just want to live normal lives as the next stage in human evolution. Naturally, the rest of the human race isn’t ready to step aside and become a second-class species overnight.

The trilogy set will include features that will allow fans to purchase advance tickets and never before seen footage of the upcoming X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which is due out in theaters May 1, 2009.

Other features run the gambit of usual suspects including numerous deleted scenes from each of the three films, cast and crew interviews, director and cast commentaries and a few Making Of featurettes for each X-Men film.

The box set, which includes 9 discs, will set you back $80 bucks or each of the three X-Men movies can also be purchased individually for $34.99.
