In an interview with Japanese pub Famitsu, Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima spoke about having to hold back on some of the material he had envisioned for the upcoming Guns of Patriots, the forth and last in the Metal Gear saga. Kojima went on to say:
For some tech experts who had been hailing the coming of the age of Blu-ray, which has a 50GB advantage over DVD, the most anticipated Playstation 3 game might not be giving gamers all they had been expecting.
So what can gamers expect to be sacrificed for space? As it stands right now, it may be the dialogs that suffers the most. Previous Metal Gear game had been heavy on the story and dialog (sometimes too heavy) and there is no doubt that Guns of Patriots won’t be any different. Metal Gear 4 producer Ryan Payton has already stated that the American and European version of the game will not carry the original Japanese voice tracks, because of the limited storage.
Even though there might be more that Kojima and the rest of the Metal Gear Solid 4 makers aren’t telling us, as to what might be hurt from the limited Blu-ray disc space, there is still no doubt in the minds of gamers that the last installment in one of gaming’s greatest franchises won’t equal, or surpass the expectations of millions of fans worldwide.
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of Patriots is due to be released June 12, 2008, as a PS3 exclusive title.
