Blockbuster goes Blu-Ray

by PJ Hruschak on Jun 19, 2007 at 03:45 PM

Gamertell Blue Ray vs. HD DVD

AP’s LA bureau reported that Blockbuster announced on Monday (June 18, 2007) it will offer primarily Blu-Ray HD for it’s DVD inventory.

Blockbuster had been renting with both HD DVD and Blue-Ray HD DVDs in select store, with 70% of customers choosing Blu-Ray movies.

Blockbuster is still being cautious, allowing the 250 stores and web site will continue to offer HD DVDs, while the rest of the company will begin getting Blu-Ray discs.

From the AP article: “I think trying to make a format decision using such a short time period is really not measuring what the consumer is saying,“ said Ken Graffeo, co-president of research company The Engineering Group.

The AP article attributes the superior Blu-ray sales to movies including “Casino Royale,“ “Spider-man” and “Pirates of the Caribbean” available only on Blu-Ray. Seems they missed that one of the biggest gadget releases in the past year, the PS3, plays Blu-Rays right out of the box. The HD DVD player for Xbox 360 is a pricey accessory -  I wonder if we’ll start seeing HD DVD games for the Xbox 360?

For now, at least in the case of one of the largest video rental companies in the nation, it seems Sony made the right move.

The format war, however, is far from over.
