Through the doors you see the store has a clean look that’s very focused on table-top RPGs and miniatures gaming. There are RPGs along one wall along with some related fiction. Along the other wall it’s pretty much all Warmachines, Hordes, Flames of War and supplies for customizing miniatures.
Store managers Brandon Kutka and his business partner Tom Wright are incredibly helpful. They are knowledgeable about what they are selling, being long-time gamers. Just as important as being helpful and knowledgeable about the products they’re selling, they are definitely a lot of fun to talk to. There will be more on the management of the store at a later time with interviews with Kutka and Wright.
Between the two walls displaying merchandise are more miniatures for games that are either built around miniatures play or, in the case of Dungeons & Dragons, that can just give you a better view of what your Dungeon Master is setting up for you. If they don’t have something that you’re interested in, ask and they’ll order a copy for you especially since they are usually looking for new and interesting games to bring into the store.
In the back area there is a game room where gamers can play pretty much whatever games they want. The store is working on getting gaming groups together to better utilize the room so if you want to come in and try to reserve a table for gaming you can either go directly to the store or you can check out their forums at Black Sun Games - Index. If you, for some reason, aren’t able to get a table you also might be able to join someone else’s group until there is an open table. Remember. It’s all fun and games until someone gets hurt. Then you hope it’s only a game character.
Black Sun Games is located at 5426 N. Kedzie, across the street from Northside College Preparatory High School. The store hours are: Sunday 10 am to 6 pm, Monday 10 am to 8 pm, Tuesday through Friday 10 am to 9 pm and Saturday 10 am to 11 pm.
