Bethesda discusses Fallout 3 Point Lookout and Mothership Zeta DLC

Point Lookout

On May 20, 2009 Bethesda announced two additional episodes to the Fallout 3 universe. “Point Lookout” will be released first on June 23, 2009 for Xbox 360 and PC for 800 MS points ($10) and “Mothership Zeta” is coming out in July, 2009 for Xbox and PC. The PS3 versions will be available later in the year. During an interview with The Hachiko, Joel Burgess, the lead designer of “Point Lookout,” and Jeff Gardiner, lead producer of Fallout 3 DLC, answered some questions, giving details on both upcoming downloads.

“Point Lookout” takes place in the rural Point Lookout, MD. They chose this location because it has a very interesting history, including rumors of a haunted lighthouse, and was the place where 50,000 Confederate prisoners were held during the Civil War. In Fallout 3, Point Lookout wasn’t directly hit by the bombs, but the swampy landscape was affected by it immensely. The residents aren’t mutated to the extent of the ghouls found in the Capital Wasteland, but they take on an appearance similar to the residents in The Hills Have Eyes.

When you download the content, a radio signal will alert you that a new fruit called Punga Fruit is being sent across the Wasteland. You then have to get on a ferry to find a man named Tobar who is responsible for distributing the fruit. The main antagonists are a cult of people who have taken over Point Lookout and you must infiltrate their ranks to take them down. The main quest will take about four hours to complete, and will come with four new achievements and quest based perks. One of these perks is called Superior Defender, which boosts your combat abilities when you are standing still.

There will be new weapons in “Point Lookout” but they are much more low tech than what we’re used to. One new weapon is a double barred shotgun, and The Disintegrator is a new rifle we’ll see in “Mothership Zeta”.

“Mothership Zeta” will start with the player being abducted by aliens, and then chronicle the escape from the ship. There will be other prisoners on board that can assist you, once you find out what the aliens are planning. The design of the dead alien in Fallout 3 is the same design the rest of the aliens on the ship will have. Bethesda says the alien ship will be steel and sterile, which is another distinct environment in the Fallout 3 universe.

There are currently no plans to raise the level cap above 30 for “Point Lookout” and “Mothership Zeta”.
