I have two words for this announcement: Frak yes! The SCI FI channel has just announced a two-hour prequel special for space drama Battlestar Galactica, to air after the final ten episodes in the series in 2009. The special will air on the channel, with a DVD release soon to follow, and it’s actually being directed by Edward James Olmos (and written by longtime BSG writer Jane Espenson).

The story is a prequel focused on Cylon #1 (Dean Stockwell), Resistance Leader Sam T. Anders and Chief Galen Tyrol; and is centered on the immediate aftermath of the Cylon attack that left the human race nearly decimated. From the press release:

“In the beginning, the Cylons had a plan, but it didn’t account for one thing: survivors.  During the chaotic aftermath of the destruction, two powerful Cylon agents struggle with plots and priorities on the human ships that got away, and among the resistance fighters who were left behind.”

Sounds tasty, no? If you’re one of the people who feel that the show has lost it’s way in the fourth season (and there are many), I’m sure this will still be worth exploring. I actually found Razor (the two-hour special that explored events all over the BSG story time line) to be more enjoyable than many 4th season episodes - they’ve certainly got the “expanded storyline” stuff down.
