The consoles
The August 2007 numbers are in from independent analysts NPD group – and the results are in keeping with the last few months – it’s going to be a very interesting Fall for everyone.

2Overall, the Wii continues to dominate (as it has surpassed DS sales for the last few months and even became the worldwide console leader in Ju007ly), selling 403.6 thousand units. Hot on it’s heels is the DS (with 383.3 thousand) and the Xbox 360 (276.7 thousand). The Playstation 2 was next with 202,000, followed by the PSP (151.2 thousand), and bringing up the rear was the Playstation 3, with 130.6 thousand.

On the software side, the picture is much more balanced. The top selling game was Madden 08 on the 360 (896,600 units), with the PS2 version taking the number 2 slot (643,600), Bioshock for the 360 at number 3 (490, 900), followed by Madden 08 on the PS3 (336,200), Wii play w. remote (256,800), Wii shooter Metroid Prime 3 (218,100), Mario Strikers Charged (also Wii – 147,400), PS2 Guitar Hero 2 w. guitar (145, 400), Mario Party 8 (138, 300), with PS2 music sim Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks the 80’s (127,100) rounding off the top ten. The top selling DS game was number 13 Brain Age 2, and the top PSP title Madden NFL 08 clocked in at number 18.

So while hardware continues to be Nintendo dominated, the software charts show a fairly even balance among the big three. It’s going to be fascinating to see how the big fall titles (Halo 3, Super Mario Galaxy, etc.) are going to impact this generation’s console wars.
