Atari classics heading to PSP

 The classic Atari Asteroids

Atari has been sitting pretty on top of a huge collection of fabled arcade classics, periodically releasing some of these priceless gaming masterpieces onto Xbox Live. Now its the turn of the PSP to receive its dip into Atari’s library of classic games with the Fall 2007 release for its PSP offering, Atari Classics Evolved, a compilation of short and sweet classic games.

The title will feature refurbished versions of 11 classics including: Asteroids, Millipede, Missile Command, Warlords, Tempest, Battlezone, Lunar Landers, Pong, Asteroid Deluxe, Super Breakout and Centipede. As is the norm, the arcade games will come with some enhancements including improved graphics, online leader boards and an ad-hoc multiplayer mode. That is good news since no one loves untouched ports. In addition, the title is set to feature 60 Atari 2600 titles including Yar’s Revenge, Night Driver, Canyon Bomber, and Crystal Castles.

The PSP certainly has intrinsic potential for arcade titles and I hope more arcade classics made way onto it. Many of the arcade-game-adoring PSP gamers have had to download hacks and emulators to run classic titles but, if more arcade games are released on the handheld then, they wouldn’t have to bother with those cumbersome download routines. Also, it is nice to see this Atari title featuring freshened-up titles and not ports. “Ports are not hot,” as a certain Paris Hilton might put it.
