Gamers fell in love with Assassin’s Creed just as they saw the first glimpse of the game at 2006 E3. It was a time when everyone was talking about next-gen consoles and Assassin’s Creed seemed the part with its heightened levels of interactivity. Barely a month after its release, the game has sold 2.5 million copies worldwide and still looks strong for more sales. This is a significant figure as even Ubisoft, the game’s publisher, had only projected sales of 3 million copies during the current fiscal year, which ends in March, 2008.
However, buoyed by the unexpected sales fest, Ubisoft has revised its sales expectations and raised financial guidance. Now the publisher expects 5 million in unit sales of Assassin’s Creed by the end of the current fiscal year 2007-08. Ubisoft has also raised its financial guidance for the current fiscal year to $1.2 billion, and expects the third quarter to be a windfall with around $600 million in revenue.
It has also raised its fiscal year target of operation income versus sales from 9% to 12%. It is not only the brilliant showing of Assassins Creed but also the marginal research and development spending on games like Tom Clancy’s End War, Brothers in Arms and FAR Cry 2,which pushed the operational income upwards.
