An established member of the mainstream media has decided to discuss what is wrong with video games for the year. However, unlike most reports which center on the negative effects of games in society, this diagnosis emphasizes negative occurrences within the industry and offers a few suggestion to fix them.
In an article titled “Airing Grievances against 2008’s Worst,” Lou Kesten takes the time to highlight some of the gaming industry’s biggest mistakes throughout the year.
Kesten is critical of Nintendo in a number of instances, calling the company out for a constant influx of minigame collections, sharply criticizing Wii Music and labeling Wii Fit as an item that will likely remain popular during the holiday season only to end up on eBay come February 2009.
Along with these points, the article’s author also questioned the release of CrossworDS for Nintendo’s portable system. While the idea was good in theory, the AP writer contends that the game’s execution proved far too simple for veteran crossword puzzle players.
The article also bemoaned the lack of consistently new Playstation Portable games and called Max Payne “the worst movie based on game,” while conversely labeling Jumper “the worst game based on a movie.”
Humorously, Infinite Undiscovery was decried for having the worst title; a fitting achievement considering that the name makes little sense to the average person. It’s no surprise, then, that the game was poorly regarded.
All in all, an interesting list by the AP. Here is hoping that in 2009, this list will be more positive than negative.
