Apple releases list of most downloaded iPhone games of 2008

by Kris Rosado on Dec 3, 2008 at 10:55 AM

iPhoneSo far, the gaming media has been a little slow taking the iPhone as a gaming platform seriously and with good reason too. Yes, the iPhone does have the potential to create some amazing looking and innovative games, but the problem is that very few developers are taking the time to put out anything of quality past various puzzle and word game clones. For proof, you can check out our weekly App Store gaming update (which you should be doing anyway!).

So it should come as no surprise that when Apple announced the top downloaded games for 2008, there are some familiar names on the board. Some of these games have been featured on a top ten list for at least three weeks if not more. Keep in mind that this is a top ten list out of thousands of games. Regardless, here are the top ten lists for both paid and free games:

Top Ten Paid

  1. Texas Hold’em
  2. Moto Chaser
  3. Crash Bandicoot: Nitro Kart 3d
  4. Super Monkey Ball
  5. Cro-Mag Rally
  6. Enigmo
  7. Air Hockey
  8. Bejeweled 2
  9. Flick Bowling
  10. Line Rider iRide

Top Ten Free

  1. Tap Tap Revenge
  2. Labrynth Lite Edition
  3. Sol Free Solitaire
  4. iBowl
  5. Pac-Man Lite
  6. Touch Hockey:FS5
  7. Cannon Challenge
  8. Audi A4 Driving Challenge
  9. Sudoku
  10. reMovemh

As MTV Multiplayer said in their article, this list doesn’t reveal too much about iPhone gamers or whether or not they are playing on an iPhone or iPod Touch. What it does show us however is that the App Store is a great place to find a variety of games and that consumers don’t mind paying $5.99 for a Crash Bandicoot racing game.
