Aonuma will not stop until he makes a game better than Ocarina of Time

Is The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time the best Zelda game ever? Critics have thought so as the game has been lavished with praise from numerous websites including GameCritics and Electric Playground.

Gamers have also regarded the game highly, although there are many that consider the game overrated.

Regardless of whether or not it is considered the pinnacle of Zelda achievement, the game is still regarded as one of the best, to the point that the game’s following it have merely stood in its shadow.

Eiji Aonuma, the director of Ocarina of Time and every subsequent Zelda title, recognizes this and has made it clear that, in his lifetime, he will create an experience will be made that will successfully knock Ocarina of Time off of its proverbial throne.

This is a tall order, considering Ocarina’s high standing in the gaming community. However, I have every confidence that he can get it done.

In his quest to reinvent Zelda, here are some suggestions that would prove helpful to his cause

First, it would help if he made Link actually speak. This would aid in adding a sense of immersion into Link’s world. After all, the basic tenets of any Zelda game are exploration and interaction. Giving Link the opportunity to respond to conversation would allow players to not feel like passive-observers of Link’s experiences.

Second, try having stories where the goal is not always to save Princess Zelda. I realize that this flies in the face of Nintendo reasoning, considering the amount of times that Mario has to pull Princess Peach out of the proverbial fire, but a plot that involved more surprises other than recovering the princess from peril would go a long way towards rejuvenating the series.

Tim Agne of MLive.com has a detailed list of how Zelda games can get better. This list is actually creative, not to mention that makes a lot of sense.

Whether these ideas would work remains to be seen but if Aonuma really wants to surpass Ocarina of Time, he will really have to get creative.
