Video games based on movies, especially kids’ movies, are practically a given, so no one should be surprised that Monsters vs. Aliens will be appearing on the small and big screens at the same time. Dreamworks’ Monsters vs. Aliens is coming out March 27, 2009, and Activision, Beenox Inc. and Amaze Entertainment are hoping to have the DS, PC, PS2, PS3, Wii and Xbox 360 games ready at the same time.
Monsters vs. Aliens sounds like a typical action game. As the five film monsters - B.O.B., Ginormica, Dr. Cockroach, Ph.D., The Missing Link and Insectosaurus, players must go through 12 levels to save the world from Gallaxhar and the aliens. Of course, only four are available in a single player mode, as the press release states Dr. Cockroach is only available in multiplayer. Each monster has a special talent or ability, and players will have to use all of them to accomplish the goals of different levels.
I’m kind of surprised to see that the only co-op player option is Dr. Cockroach. If you’re going to add in a co-op multiplayer mode, wouldn’t you want players to be able to pick what monster they’re playing as. I mean, it isn’t like there are only two monsters. The description of how Dr. Cockroach can blast enemies or get to certain areas almost makes it sound like it isn’t a full co-op mode. Like, maybe the Monsters vs. Aliens co-op is like Mario Galaxy‘s co-op.
As hookey as the actual Monsters vs. Aliens movie (and game) sounds, the movie does sound like it has a splendid cast. Reese Witherspoon, Seth Rogan, Kiefer Sutherland, Hugh Laurie, Will Arnet and Steven Colbert are all providing voices for this computer animated project. If Activision’s video game adaptation calls upon the original voice actors, it could help make the Monsters vs. Aliens game worthwhile.
