The firm's leading analyst, David Mercer, said in a statement on the Strategy Analyst website that Blu-ray has passed its first hurdle “but a much bigger challenge now lies ahead if Blu-Ray is to become as successful as DVD, and content owners, retailers and manufacturers must now demonstrate that they can work together to promote Blu-Ray effectively.”
The firm has portended cumulative sales of 100 million standalone Blu-ray players by 2012 and the figure doesn’t take into account PS3 sales, which also doubles up as a Blu-ray player.
I believe that the biggest challenge for the Blu-ray is not usurping the DVD - which has now reached its fag-end and will soon meet its natural demise - but to resist the digital distribution model for long enough. It is undoubtedly the last storage format before digital distribution becomes the order of the day.
