Analyst predicts new Microsoft, Nintendo consoles in 2010

by Pulkit Chandna on Feb 16, 2008 at 02:33 PM

Evan WilsonAs with all of its previous consoles, Sony has promised a 10-year life cycle for the PS3. Although many have dismissed it, the history of previous Playstation consoles suggests that Sony has at least made an earnest effort to elongate the life of its consoles. If Pacific Crest Securities’ analyst Evan Wilson is to be believed, however, Nintendo and Microsoft might not follow suit.

Wilson shared his beliefs in an investor note sent to Gamespot. According to him, there is very little likelihood of Nintendo and Microsoft extending the life cycle of their current generation offerings beyond the usual 5 years. He expects console sales to reach their peak in 2010, when Microsoft and Nintendo will most probably launch their next generation of consoles.

Wilson had earlier claimed that Nintendo had already finished developing the next handheld that will eventually replace the DS, though it was going to hold back its launch until DS sales reached its threshold. He anticipates the respective successors of the PSP and DS to also appear in 2010 – a very hectic year, indeed.

Wilson’s other predictions include EA which is aiming to increase its revenues by 71% to $6 billion by fiscal 2011. Wilson doesn’t believe that it will be able to meet that goal, though he praised the publisher for overcoming “its addiction to spiking development costs, game delays, poor game quality, and lackluster innovation.”
