America’s Video Game Expo to include games, anime, TV, film, more

The 2008 America’s Video Game Expo (VGXPO), which will take place November 21‒23, 2008, at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia, PA (USA), next month, will expand upon its predecessors with a number of additional attractions including: a retro gaming convention, an anime festival, TV and film screenings, a series of robotics competitions and an evening program that will incorporate music and late night gaming.

The news, delivered via press release last week (October 10, 2008), follows Lunar Tide Communications’ previous announcement of the East Coast Games Summit — a bonus event aimed at those looking to begin a career in the game industry which will also run alongside the main expo.

The R-Botx Fest will see high school students participating in engineering events over the course of the three days, while the Anime Game Fest — a collection of anime screenings, panel discussions, gaming tournaments, and more —  will complement various “sneak peek” videogame and sci-fi TV and film screenings.

The Retro Con will fill two 5,000 sq. foot ballrooms with a plethora of classic concept artwork, advertisements, and magazines covers. A selection of unnamed “industry luminaries” will also be giving speeches on the history of the industry.

Videotopia 2008 — a traveling museum of more than 100 vintage (and playable) arcade games including Pac Man, Street Fighter and company — will also be making an appearance. All of the additional festivals and conventions will be held in the same location as the main expo in the Pennsylvania Convention Center, so you won’t need to plan for any additional travel time.

If the aforementioned isn’t enough, the VGXPO “After Hours & Gaming in the Dark” festival will kick off once the main exhibit is closed after each day (8:00 pm on Friday, 7:00 pm on Saturday, 5:00 pm on Sunday) and will run until 1:00 am. Those in attendance can expect to be treated to friendly and competitive LAN tournaments, game-related music performances, cosplay competitions, and even a laser show.

If you live in the area, you can also volunteer to work at the VGXPO. If you would rather attend for recreational purposes only, a standard weekend pass for a single adult will set you back $15.00 on the door or $12.50 in advance. Full pricing details can be found on VGXPO.com.
