Activision Blizzard discovers the Call of Duty money tree

by Jeremy Hill on Sep 18, 2008 at 12:01 PM

Call of Duty LogoActivision Blizzard is contemplating capitalizing on the popularity of the multiplayer modes in the Call of Duty series by further charging for the experience. The company sees the potential of making money outside of the retail space by bringing out more content to purchase digitally. Mike Griffith, the CEO of publishing for Activision Blizzard, noted one of the reasons behind CoD 4‘s low resale numbers is the additional content it offers. It also explains why CoD 4 is still selling strong at $59.99.

According to Griffith, the average Call of Duty 4 player has spent 5 days of their life playing online since buying the game. Those statistics have prompted Activision Blizzard to offer Day One Advantage for Call of Duty: World at War. Day One Advantage is an offer given by GameStop that gives those who pre-order or purchase the collectors edition of the game access to weapons that would otherwise need to be unlocked. A high powered in-game rifle will be given out with pre-orders and a LMG (light machine gun) will be given out with the collectors edition.

Griffith also confirmed that Call of Duty 6 is currently in development by Infinity Ward and is scheduled to be released in 2010.
