If the number of people who downloaded the demo of Namco Bandai’s Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation from the Xbox LIVE Marketplace so far is any indication, the series’ first Xbox entry looks to be a lock-on for sales at retail when it takes off October 23, 2007. Namco Bandai announced that more than 500,000 downloads of the demo were recorded in its first week of availability and was also the top-loaded demo of the past week, even against lots of E3-related items. The demo has received favorable impressions from gamers and press members and continues to be downloaded at a rapid pace.
As for the full game, expect Ace Combat 6 to deliver photo-realistic operation zones, authentic aircraft and several new features added to the already-proven gameplay that the series has been offering for more than a decade.
The Project Aces team is adding two key systems: the Dynamic Operation System and the Allied Support System. The Dynamic Operation System will allow for multiple engagements to take place in a theater of operations, independent of each other. This means that a naval battle and and ground assault can take place simultaneously, with the player possibly having to alternate their routes to assist at any time. The Allied Support System gives players the ability to call in reinforcements via land, sea, or air. In addition, look for Ace Combat 6 to have online play for up to 16 players.
Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation is a key game for the Xbox 360. Namco Bandai’s decision to break the series away from Sony consoles is a sign of the continued acceptance of the Xbox 360 by Japanese publishers and developers. It also marks the second major intellectual property that Namco Bandai has moved away from Sony exclusivity. Ridge Racer 7 was the other.
There’s certainly a great deal of excitement around this title and it’s well-deserved at this point. The Project Aces team has laid the groundwork for the flight combat genre as we know it today and, given stronger hardware and online capability, the sky is the limit.
