After its trip into modern warfare, the Call of Duty franchise is returning to the World War II time frame. The big difference is that it will be focusing on a new front in the war to end all wars. Call of Duty: World at War will be focusing on the Pacific theater as you island hop your way to victory or death.
Details on this new CoD release are sparse but from the information coming out, there is really not that much that innovates in terms of the war/shooter experience. It’s not developed by Infinity Ward, the company behind CoD2/CoD4. It’s developed by Treyarch, the developers of CoD3 and will be available for the Xbox 360, PS3, PC and Wii.
One of the details that has been released is that it will have a darker, grittier undertone that will show war for what it is: brutal, unforgiving, cruel and ugly. Note that the ugly comment is not regarding the graphics, because of what has been shown so far is absolutely beautiful, especially since it’s the exact same engine as CoD4.
Fire will hold an integral role in the game for the first time in the series. Then again, it is taking place in Pacific islands, most of which are covered with dense vegetation. Also, nothing tells the enemy to leave like setting a building they’re in that’s on fire. Then again, that’s not really innovative since fire plays a big part in quite a few games games like Bioshock, Alone in the Dark 5 and Far Cry 2.
The environments, or at least part of the environments, will also be playing more than a cinematic glow giving you a means for escape when cornered and can be used for tactical advantages. Yet again, not really innovative because even partially destructible environments have been in place outside of the war genre for a while, though it does offer a change from, at best, being able to shoot through some walls. Being that it’s the pacific and deals with the island hopping soldier, sooner or later you will end up in the water. Yet again swimming really isn’t new, but with a CoD4 visual flare the game’s water effects and water-based combat visuals will be quite appealing.
One of the biggest draws for the Call of Duty franchise that lacks full details, the multiplayer modes. We do know that Team Deathmatch will resemble the Deathmatch setting for CoD4 with some obvious changes. Switch the Skorpions to the Sten, radar to recon planes and air strike with artillery strikes. Players will also respawn closer to the rest of their team where they can get back into the action quicker but will be placed in a way where they don’t have to worry about being placed in the sights of an enemy before they can move. There will also be a Vehicle Deathmatch setting. There will also be two player split screen co-op or four player online co-op.
For more information, here is a video of an interview with the developers of CoD 5.
