The ScandiPhone is styled after a now more than 50 year old Swedish designer rotary telephone: the Ericafon, from Ericcson. One held the hefty telephone in on hand, taking it off-hook automatically when it was picked up. Tilting it, one could dial the number using the embedded rotary dial on the underside. Placing the Ericafon down on a surface automatically terminated the call.
At a time when most phones were of a single Model-T design, available in virtually any color—so long as it was black—the Ericafon was a radical departure from convention. It was soon followed by the Princess telephone, and other non-standard designs.
