7-Eleven getting into video game retail biz for the holidays, possibly longer

by Kris Rosado on Nov 23, 2008 at 10:37 AM

7-ElevenEver have one of those nights where you just can’t seem to sleep? There’s nothing on the tube and you just have the itch to play a game, but none of the ones on your shelf. Now, there might finally be a place to accommodate your late night gaming and muchie binges. Since GameStop feels the need to close so early, 7-Eleven has taken upon itself to be your late night gaming fix.

With the earliest foray into the gaming market being the release of mega-popular alien shooting, Mountain Dew branding, Halo 3, for the company, their latest exploits in, um, selling Gears of War 2 and World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King before their respective street dates, the company has been getting a lot of attention in the gaming media.

Now it seems, according to an article by GameSpot, 7-Eleven will be getting into the video game retail market full-time, starting with some of this holiday’s big releases including Fallout 3, Wrath of the Lich King, Gears of War 2, Quantum of Solace and Guitar Hero: World Tour. They will also be providing PlayStation Network cards, Xbox Live cards and cards for MMOs including World of Warcraft.

7-Eleven’s category manager for gaming and electronics, Michael Jester, was quoted by GameSpot in saying:

This is not just a holiday promotion for us, but a brand-new product line-up that will be available year-round. We may not be a total entertainment destination…yet, but we’re hoping to expand our selection beyond the high-dollar, hot-selling games to include options for all budgets, like value-priced video games as well as DVD movies.

Though there was no mention of the broken street dates or promises of working on early selling, though I’m sure consumers aren’t complaining one bit.

Sure,  nobody is expecting 7-Eleven to take over GameStop but the thought of how much an impact 7-Eleven can have in the video game retail industry is interesting. There’s enough of the stores to cover almost every location you can think of and, in some cases (such as myself), a 7-Eleven is a lot closer than the nearest GameStop/EB Games.

On the flip side, there is also the worry that these places may just become outlets of horrible shovelware not unlike the bins full of $1 games that plagued supermarkets back in the early days of gaming.

So what do you think - Are video games a Big Gulp a good combo?
