A bit of an unexpected announcement from EA reveals that the MySims franchise is going to expand beyond casual simulation/action games in 2009. It turns out that EA wants to branch out into multiplayer games with the series, and has announced it will do so with two new titles, MySims Party and MySims Racing.
Like the other MySims games, MySims and MySims Kingdom, both games will be available on the DS and Wii. Based on the press release descriptions, it sounds like, yet again, the Wii versions will be the best ones, and the DS ones will be slightly less extravagant. For example, MySims Party Wii will have 50 mini-games, while MySims Party DS will have 40. There will be some mini-games specifically designed for each system’s unique capabilities, but still, the Wii gets more games.
MySims Racing is a bit more mysterious, at the moment at least. It sounds like a standard racing game, where up to four players can compete at once. Like Mario Kart, there will be different power-ups and weapons you can use to give your racer an edge. A unique aspect of the game is the ability to completely customize the look and abilities of your racer’s car. The DS version of MySims Racing may be the superior one, as the press release explicitly states that version will have Nintendo WiFi Connection compatibility, but doesn’t mention the same compatibility for the Wii version.
While MySims Party is looking and sounding like a hit for me, MySims Racing seems like it could be a miss. Maybe it’s just because I’m not really big on novelty racing games. For some reason, I could see myself buying and enjoying MySims Party a lot more. I am a pretty big Sims fan in general, so at the very least I’ll probably rent both games to see how EA did.
