10 things you can do with your (now) useless UMDs if you decide to upgrade to the PSPgo

PSP UMD MountainYou’ve decided to be one of the PSPgo first adopters. Good for you! I wish I had your spare cash and hopeful optimism. If you’re taking the plunge and you’re already a PSP owner, you’ll find yourself suddenly in the possession of a number of useless games. Well, not totally useless. But you don’t need them for their original purpose anymore. You’ve chosen the path of the pioneer! You’re download-only now!

So, what do you do with all of those old UMDs. Chances are, when you went for an original PSP, you went with a bundle. That means you have at least two UMDs you won’t be needing anymore. Never fear! Here are some ideas you can keep in mind while wondering what to do with them.

  1. Keep your old PSP and actually play them.: Always a valid option. But then why did you spend $250 on a brand new PSPgo?!?!
  2. Take matters into your own hands: There are a select number of PSP owners who have installed homebrew firmware to their PSPs. This means that they can rip UMDs they own to backup the games. You could always try doing this and see if your new PSPgo and run the games you backed up. (Editor’s Note: Piracy is bad, and we do not condone it.)
  3. Sell them: Even if you decide to completely cast off the original PSP and its UMD lifestyle, there are probably many others who didn’t. Cash in all of your old UMDs at GameStop or Amazon. If you turn in more than five, you may even make enough money to buy one game for your PSPgo from the PlayStation Store.
  4. Make an elegant collage: No better time to get into arts and crafts than today! You can call the first one, “RPGs I never got the chance to finish.”
  5. Create a balancing UMD act: You know those guys who balance plates on sticks? Do the same thing with UMDs and pencils! Amaze your friends! Impress your family! Just pop the disk out of the protective plastic case, sharpen up some #2s and you’re all set. People will be especially astonished and think you’re super talented if you don’t tell them there’s a tiny hole in the center of each UMD.
  6. Sticker time!: Grab yourself some double sided tape from your local office supply store and slap it on the back of a UMD. Then, slap it anywhere else for retro goodness.
  7. Tap into your inner musician: Take out the discs and put two together for tiny cymbals. Put thread through the holes of two and you’ve got castanets. If you want to get really adventurous, you could probably even make a tamborine.
  8. Build a tasteful shrine out of the boxes and pray for UMD conversion: You can stop by every day, light incense and pray, “Someday… please someday SCEA!”
  9. Use them in home renovation projects: You could pop the UMDs out of the protective case, then use them as decorative drawer handles or put them at the end of hooks or knobs.
  10. Regift: Give it away. You can give it to a PSP owning friend or family member you like. Or you could give it to a PSP-less friend or family member you don’t like. Either way, it’s not your problem anymore!
