Delusions of Grandeur: Sony wants to sell 10 million more PS3s than PS2s
Industry punching bag and Sony’s game chief executive, Kaz Harai, has set a corporate goal to sell 150 million PS3s. That’s 10 million more PS3s than the number of ridiculously ubiquitous PS2s sold (approx. 140 million) in its nine-year existence so far.
According to the BBC, the Playstation 2 had sold 50 million units worldwide two years after its US release. That’s 36 million more than the number of PS3s sold 22 months after its worldwide release. Sure, it’s two months shy of two years but there’s a very slim chance Sony can…
Valve clarifies Xbox Live’s Portal expansion
Reports last month of additional content to paradigm-busting, platitude-eliciting puzzler Portal were heart-stopping revelations for die-hards Valve fans.
But, according to GameSetWatch, Valveās Doug Lombardi said the new levels for Portal will be culled from the Portal: The Flash Game map pack. While there’s still plenty of reasons for console players to be happy, there are now a few to get riled up about, too…
ESA’s 2008 report: Forty percent of gamers are women
Maybe it’s time to start rewriting some of those rote gamer cliches. You know, like, “Your mom is such a gamer.” Statistically, thats not so far-fetched.
According to the ESA’s (Entertainment Software Association’s) annual report released during E3 2008, 40 percent of all gamers are women older than 18 and a quarter are older than 50. That’s up from 38 percent and 24 percent, respectively, from the 2007 release (PDF). The average age of gamers also ticked up to 35 from 33.
This is the sort of data that plays right into the…
EA brings Hasbro’s Scrabble to Pogo, later to Facebook
EA is ready to wipe your Scrabble clone-playin’ guilt away with a legit, free version of the tabletop classic for Facebook. The videogame megapublisher has the official Hasbro board game available on Pogo right now and it will be available on social networking site Facebook later this month.
What really jumps out of the Pogo version is the more authentic replication of the traditional board and tiles although it’s a little…
Remembering Dance Aerobics, the spiritual predecessor to Wii Fit
It turns out that all the way back in 1987, a game for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) was tricking its unsuspecting users into exercise routines. Bandai’s Dance Aerobics is the spiritual predecessor to Nintendo’s Wii Fit and natural movement.
The game features a few modes of following an instructor’s robotic stomping pattern that you repeat on a Power Pad accessory…
The perfect “Through the Fire and the Flames” Guitar Hero III run
Chris Chike has obliterated his own Guitar Hero record. You know, the one they just published in that Guinness Book of World Records for video games? Maybe they’ll release booster packs so you can rip out the offending pages and replace them with fresh greatness.
Chike put down a 100 percent on the punishing “Through the Fire and the Flames” song by speed metal legends DragonForce…
GTA may have changed real-world gang structure
While the streets might be safe for a few weeks while everyone is inside playing Grand Theft Auto IV: Vice City, it’s only a matter of time before hooligans decide to stretch their thumbs and break out of the family den or dilapidated tenement apartment (adorned with a 42 in. LCD screen cranked up to 1080p, natch).
This is the fourth time a GTA has cracked the skulls of our law- and god-fearing youth, and it’s hard not to see its influence everywhere. Take this piece in the Sunday New York Times Magazine about a group of former gang members who try to head off attempts at gangland shooting violence…
Three guns in Rainbow Six Vegas 2 you might have skipped
Everyone knows the M468, an upgrade to a standard-issue US military rifle. You may have clutched to it throughout the campaign once you unlocked it in Rainbow Six Vegas 2. I certainly did the first go. And though you’ll be fine in the online battlefield with whatever weapon you’ve grown to love, here’s a few ideas to get you started looking for other ways to satisfy your trigger finger…
Blast From the Past: Id, Apogee in awesome 1992 video
George Broussard and John Romero. Titans of another lifetime. This clip from a local newscast tries to get to the bottom of what all the kids were talking about in 1992, illustrating how neither could find that charming line between hubris and coy self-promotion.
But there’s more to this clip than just hindsight. There really is that jittery feeling of something big about to happen. The narrator’s gushing over “texture mapping” is barely half the story…
Street Fighter film’s cast list leaked
Capcom has finally leaked some of the cast for the forthcoming live-action Street Fight movie. So, let’s take a look at some early matchups.
Vancouver native Kristin Kreuk will step into Chun Li’s white boots and glistening tights. She played Lana Lang on Smallville where she’s taken part in at least some combat. But can she handle the…
