Master Chief coming to a PS3 near you
In a weird turn of events one of the most iconic characters on the Xbox 360 console, Master Chief from Halo, is making appearances on one of its bitter rivals, the PS3. Unfortunately for PS3 owners and Sony execs they are not getting a Halo port any time soon but Spartan 117 is nonetheless a playable character thanks to a very clever mod for Epic Games’ Unreal Tournament 3.
In this version of the popular shooter, PS3 owners can download user-generated content for the PC version including the Master Chief model, which is…
Hospital uses videogame to help burn victims
Have you ever noticed how when something is hurting you, you can put your attention on something else to help feel less pain or to seemingly forget all about it? This reasoning is what drove a hospital in Illinois (USA) to try an innovative system that helps in the recovery of patients suffering from burns.
The Loyola University Hospital, in Maywood, Ill. (USA), is employing a virtual reality system called SnowWorld that helps in immersing the patient in a snowy landscape complete with snowmen, chilly rivers and…
Guitar Hero III player gets Guinness World Record
OK, here’s the deal. There’s a guy who can not only beat “Through the Fire and Flames” on expert on Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock, but he can get 97% of the notes and get a streak over 1000. In the immortal words of Stan Lee: “ ‘nuff said.”
A 16-year-old boy from Rochester, Minn. (USA) by the name of Chris Chike won a tournament where apparently all the contestants were true guitar heroes, as all of them had to play “Through the Fire and Flames” on expert. His victory got him the Guinness World Record for…
Gibson sues Activision, Activision sues back
After a long collaboration between the two companies on the very successful Guitar Hero franchise, in January 2008 Gibson Guitar Corp. filed a law suit against Activision Inc. for patent infringement claiming it has a patent for a system that simulates a concert experience and playing a virtual instrument. The suit asks for Activison to either stop manufacturing all components of the Guitar Hero video game or to pay a license fee for the system.
Earlier this week, Activision filed a lawsuit to complain to the Superior Court in California, claiming Gibson’s patent is invalid and the guitar maker has…
Halo themed laser tag weapons
For those of us that haven’t had enough of the Halo franchise, Jasman Toys is now providing the opportunity of finally handling Covenant weaponry. They are putting out a line of laser tag guns based on the models of the Plasma Rifle and the Plasma Pistol, complete with force feedback, and realistic behaviors similar to their video game counterparts. The Plasma Rifle will overheat after firing it for too long and the Plasma Pistol features both single shot and overcharge firing modes. Along with these two guns, there’s also a shield generator that depletes after taking a number of shots and can be…

Dark Sector banned in Australia for excessive violence
The Office of Film and Literature Classification (OFLC), Australia’s classification board, has refused to give a rating to Digital Extreme’s latest game, Dark Sector, essentially making it illegal to sell the game in that country. The OFLC considers the game to be too violent.
Dark Sector is a third-person shooter about a black-ops agent named Hayden Tenno who, while investigating the propagation of a deadly virus, gets infected with it and turns into a bio-weapon with extraordinary combat abilities. One of the main weapons on the game is the glaive, a plate-sized throwing star much like the one on the movie Krull. This weapon can help…
Bible may prove videogames ain’t so bad
There is an interesting article by Bruce Everiss that uses the Bible to help put things in perspective regarding the ratings system and how it is used.
If we were to examine the Bible under the same light as so many videogames, we would find it potentially inappropriate reading material for children. Using to a website that can search the King James Bible for content was used to look for some references, the results show that the word “harlot” is used dozens of times as well as others such as “fornicator” and “sodomite...”
