Playstation Store Update for the week of June 12-18, 2008

by Richard Snyder on Jun 17, 2008 at 07:34 PM

This pic was made through 1970s analog cloning and the Super Baby Method

Sorry this column is later than usual, comrades.  I was playing Metal Gear Solid 4.  And by saying that, I mean I was dreaming of playing MGS4.  And after that, I was in some kind of flying ruin floating in the middle of a psychedelic sky with some hot brunette girl.  It was awesome!  Then, before I could figure out what was going to happen next, I woke up.

In the wake of such a major bummer, I give you this fine list of this week’s Playstation Store stuff…

Playstation Store Update for the week of June 5-11, 2008

gamertell playstation store weekly update
gamertell ye olde playstation oneThe Gamertell Playstation Store updates returned from the dead and with them comes Qore, which is an online video “magazine” that describes itself as offering a behind-the-scenes look at “the world of Playstation” or something. To put it in another way, it’s stuff that would normally be under “Game Videos” that you have to shell out money for.

On a less cynical note, it does make me nostalgic for the awesome Playstation Underground discs I got when I was young and generally more enthusiastic.

Anyway, you know the score.  Here’s the rundown…

Playstation Store Update for the week of April 24 to May 1, 2008

by Richard Snyder on Apr 28, 2008 at 08:11 PM

R's come in many types
The relaunch of the Playstation Store must’ve given Sony some major momentum. There’s actual meat in this update too. Indeed, it’s much better if you ask me. It’s putting a few PSP games up for download, along with a PS1 offering.  Well, that’s kind of a misnomer, since it’s R-Types which was a PS1 compilation of the first two games of the ancient shmup series.  They’re truly the defining epics of our times right now: frustrating and nigh impossible, but at least they’re fun.  For those keeping score, R-Type II is actually the original version from which Super R-Type, on the SNES and Wii Virtual Console, was ported, except this version is easier, having those strange “checkpoint” things.

We’ve also got tons of music game add-ons, in addition to some Call of Duty 4 stuff.  Consume, folks.

Keep reading to learn what’s available.

Playstation Store Update for the week of April 3-9, 2008

by Richard Snyder on Apr 21, 2008 at 05:42 PM

gamertell gran turismo 5 prologue screen shotThe Playstation Store reopens with a bang and by “a bang,” I mean a new layout and a $40 uberdemo, Gran Turismo 5: Prologue.  It’s pretty, I guess, though I’m more of an arcade racing freak and get more than my fair share of real-world physics from commuting.

On the good side, it really brings out the old-timer in me since it reminds so much of shareware except much more expensive.  Be sure to register, boys and girls.

For the rest, along with the usual Rock Band stuff, Warhawk is getting some expansive love.

Click through for this week’s complete list…

Konami registers “Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia” with US Patent Office

by Richard Snyder on Apr 11, 2008 at 10:34 AM

I probably could've put Harmony of Dissonance screens here and nobody'd be the wiser

Apparently Konami patented Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia at the US Patent Office, according to The Magic Box.  Couple this with current Castlevania chief Koji Igarashi’s words several months ago, that the next DS entry of the series would be announced a few months after the release of Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles on the PSP, and it sounds like the first info is cropping up about the next game of the series.

But that isn’t all.  This discovery may indeed tie it to screenshots…

This Week’s Famitsu: New prosecutor game starring Miles Edgeworth

by Richard Snyder on Apr 11, 2008 at 12:12 AM

This makes Wendy Oldbag very happy.

The most recent issue of the Japanese magazine Weekly Famitsu has leaked Capcom’s “Gyakuten Not Saiban” project a little early: a new Ace Attorney spin-off called Gyakuten Renji, meaning “Turnabout Prosecutor,” starring Miles Edgeworth, the iconic and all-too-frilly rival of series hero Phoenix Wright.

The game will sport a different from the previous mainline AAs where you’ll actually get to see your character in…

by Richard Snyder on Mar 31, 2008 at 05:44 PM

dear god why

One thing that can be said about the latest Playstation Store update, it sure isn’t skinny.  Of course, the bulk of it is Karaoke Revolution enough songs ‘to make you dizzy, but who’s keeping score?

For this meaty update we have the demo of R-Type Command along with more first-person shooter maps, and Boston-mania for the obligatory Rock Band update.

But here, check out the complete list for yourself…

Xbox 360 thief pwned by the Internet

by Richard Snyder on Mar 25, 2008 at 02:06 PM

Beware the intrawebsWe interrupt your steady stream of run-of-the-mill blogging, to bring you this awesome tale of revenge.

At the center of this case is a stolen Xbox 360, pilfered alongside a laptop and TV from one Jesse McPherson of Philadelphia while he was away at the SXSW Film Festival in Austin at the beginning of March.

McPherson eventually managed to track the laptop to a local pawn shop. Upon examining the security footage, he found pictures of the culprit…

id to expand focus as PC gamers move to consoles

by Richard Snyder on Mar 25, 2008 at 12:26 PM

gamertell pcgamer

Next up to cast a shadow on PC gaming’s vitality is id Software, which had been a driving force in the platform’s popularity during the ‘90s with the Doom and Quake games.

Last Thursday (March 20, 2008), id’s Director of Business, Steve Nix, told Eurogamer that the average first-person shooter player isn’t just some guy armed with a keyboard and mouse anymore. Although id will continue to steadfastly support PC gaming, it must take into account the current market shifts. Nix told Eurogamer that even formerly die-hard PC gamers are making the jump to consoles.

“I know that I have friends who are…

Playstation Store update for the week of March 20-26, 2008

by Richard Snyder on Mar 24, 2008 at 07:41 PM

It really is that good.

And this week is also very typical.  Yeah-yeah, a Condemned 2 demo and another one for that Sega Tennis mashup thing, if people actually still give a damn about Sega anymore.  Standard-issue Rock Band stuff.  Water, rinse, repeat.

That is, except for the announcement of a special edition Blu-ray of Gattaca.

So, for the rest of this space, allow me to make a Public Service Announcement to the more tech-savvy who are actually into this whole “new format” tripe.  Gattaca, if you haven’t seen it, is quite the gem.  It’s a grand dystopian epic of…
