Alternate Disc-Tractions: Ruby-Spears Superman complete series DVD review

by PJ Hruschak on Nov 13, 2009 at 06:14 PM

ruby-spears superman dvd screen shot warner bros box artCelebrating Supe’s 50th anniversary, Ruby-Spears Productions miraculously got the rights to create Superman the animated TV series.

It exists in an awkward gap between the kitche-y late-1970s-to-early-1980s Super Friends cartoons and the slick 1990s Superman: The Animated series. It’s a series that only those who could bear the live-action Superboy TV series recall.

Superman goes far to embrace elements from print, film and even previous animated series, sometimes seeming disjointed but, by the time you get through all 13 episodes, becomes appropriate.

Deal of the Day: Buy Wii Fit Plus, get a free case of Hint flavored water

by PJ Hruschak on Nov 11, 2009 at 07:01 PM

hint water flavorsBeverage companies have been targeting gamers for a while.

Recall Harcos’ Mana Drink, Mountain Dew more than once and, of course, various Bawls brews.

The latest beverage endeavor is by Hint Inc., a company that specializes in flavored water sans sugar. Instead of rebranding an existing product with a lame gamer-esque name or some fancy art, Hint has instead decided to piggyback the popularity of Nintendo’s exercise game, Wii Fit Plus.

Hallmark’s Christmas 2009 Galaga arcade cabinet ornament

by PJ Hruschak on Nov 6, 2009 at 03:36 PM

hallmark keepsake galaga arcade cabinaet ornament christmas 2009As a followup to the 2008 Pac-Man mini arcade cabinet ornament, Hallmark is sticking with the same theme.

This year’s ornament is a miniaturized reproduction of the Galaga arcade cabinet (QXI1365) complete with mini buttons, mini joystick, lights and sounds. Press the buttons and you are treated to several seconds of classic tuneage including the intro and what sounds like the first wave of diving aliens. The top panel of the cabinet also lights up so the Galaga logo glows a bit. Aside from the effects, the cabinet also features a mini “screen shot” of the game.

Gamertell Review: Opticon and IntelliScanner Mini handheld laser barcode scanners (updated)

by PJ Hruschak on Nov 6, 2009 at 08:34 AM

intelliscanner mini handheld laser barcode scanner in hand

This was originally going to a two separate reviews, one for the Opticon OPN-2100 handheld laser scanner and another the IntelliScanenr Mini handheld laser scanner. After using both with Collectorz Game Collector (and Movie Collector) software, however, I could not find any discernible differences in physical design or performance.

The main differences in the products are tiny cosmetics, the accompanying accessories and the prices.

squeeballs crate stuffed plush animals

When your friendly neighborhood delivery person (hey Tim) comes to your door with a wooden crate in tow and you didn’t order anything, you know it’s going to be fun.

It’s been a while since I’ve received notable swag from game company - I blame the economy - but this one proved to be especially interesting.

Prying open the nailed down wood lid to the small wooden crate revealed a dozen plush (read: stuffed) SqueeBalls Party creatures.

wii 2 theoretical image with blu-rayThe big rumor of the day is that Nintendo is planning to release the Wii 2 in 2010 and the newer system will include a Blu-ray drive.

The rumor comes courtesy of French language site Logic-Sunrise which cites a “very stable source” (at lest that’s how Yahoo’s BableFish translates it). It also indicates that Nintendo may be waiting to announce the Wii 2 until one month prior to the system’s release.
