CES 2009: WiTricity promises a world without any cables

by Jeremy Hill on Jan 5, 2009 at 06:41 PM

WiresWe’ve all been in a situation in which we had to choose which one of our electricity powered devices would be plugged in and which one would go wanting. We’ve resorted to using bundles of extension cords and power strips that can may not be so easy on the eyes when company comes over to watch a movie or play games.

The 2009 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas is expected to show off the first products that have done away with all of those troublesome cables once and for all, according to The Observer.

Products such as digital picture frames, speakers and forms of lighting will show off what “WiTricity” is all about.

These aren’t just plain wireless products. WiTricity is the idea of gathering electricity wirelessly, similar to the way WiFi internet…

Pangea Software update results in a better Bugdom 2

by Jenni Lada on Jan 5, 2009 at 05:37 PM

Bugdom 2If you own Bugdom 2 for your iPhone or iPod Touch, you may want to stop by the iTunes App Store sometime today. It turns out that Pangea Software, while incredibly pleased with Bugdom 2, has decided that it could make the game even better. So, today (January 5, 2008), the game has been updated to version 2.0.

If you already own Bugdom 2, you’ll be able to update your version of the game for free. It turns out that this update completely revolutionizes the control scheme already in place in the game, and adds in a virtual game pad that players can use to help Skip the grasshopper retrieve his backpack from Bully Bee. If you’ve never played before, then you can pick it up for the first time and experience the most refined version of the game.

Bugdom 2 is only $3.99 on the iTunes store, and is good for players ages four and up. You can even test drive the game…

Roy Orbison’s music appearing in Rock Band 2 tomorrow

by Jenni Lada on Jan 5, 2009 at 04:33 PM

Roy OrbisonOn January 6, 2009, a music legend is going to be making his debut in Rock Band 2. The first Roy Orbison track pack is going to be released tomorrow on the Xbox LIVE Marketplace. It will eventually be on the PlayStation Store as well, but not until January 15, 2009.

The first Roy Orbison Rock Band 2 downloadable content pack (dlc) is going to be packed with hits. “Oh, Pretty Woman,“ “Claudette,“ “In Dreams,“ “Ooby Dooby” and “You Got It” are the first six releases. I think it would be some sort of crime if “Oh, Pretty Woman” wasn’t included. There’d probably be riots if it wasn’t…

Nielsen 2008 console rankings are in, PlayStation 2 is number one

by Jenni Lada on Jan 5, 2009 at 03:36 PM

Playstation 2 PS2Nielsen’s latest top ten list for 2008 has revealed something that most Sony fans already know - the PlayStation 2 is still a hot commodity. It is so hot, in fact, that Nielsen is saying it was the most played console in 2008. I guess Sony really knew what it was doing when it made the PS2.

Nielsen Wire reported all the official figures from Nielson concerning the top seven consoles. The PS2 game in first in terms of use, followed by the Xbox 360, Wii, Xbox, Playstation 3 and GameCube. There was also an ambiguous “others” given for seventh place, likely refering to all older consoles that alone didn’t have enough usage minutes to achieve a ranking.

I bet Sony is disappointed to see the PS3 come in fifth place. The original Xbox even beat the PlayStation 3…

Rumor: Playstation 3 possibly inching closer toward an early “Game Over”

by Jason Townsend-Rogers on Jan 5, 2009 at 02:24 PM

Sony Playstation 3While there are undoubtedly a multitude of gamers who are proud of their Playstation 3 purchases, Sony business executives are not as confident, considering that their choice gaming console remains consistently behind the competition and possesses a negative stigma as a product with features that fail to justify its high cost.

Unfortunately, regardless of the current state of the Playstation, Sony business executives have more considerable issues to consider, if this report from the UK Times is any indication.

That publication’s report mentions that Sony is due for “sacred cow-slaying measures” which will…

Gamestop will stop accepting original Xbox items after February 9, 2009

by Jason Townsend-Rogers on Jan 5, 2009 at 01:14 PM

gamestop xbox posterWhile I may not have owned an Xbox, its value to the gaming industry can’t be overstated. It was, in fact, the first system at the time to debut with a fully-featured internal hard drive and the first to introduce online competitive video game playing to the masses. Along with these distinctions, gamers owe the Xbox a significant debt of gratitude for the introduction of notable franchises such as Halo, Jade Empire and Ninja Gaiden.

These factors have undoubtedly endeared gamers to their Xboxes, a loyalty that has since been extended to the 360. However, gamers who are still interested in expanding the libraries of their original system are now pinched for time. Gamestop recently announced that after February 9, 20009, the store will no longer accept or stock any items related to Microsoft’s initial entry into the console wars.

In other words, if you were interested in…

Apple App Store update for the week of December 29, 2008 - January 4, 2009

by Kris Rosado on Jan 5, 2009 at 12:04 PM

gamertell apple app store weekly update
Glam Rock TriviaThe big game for this week is Silent Hill: The Escape. While I don’t know much about the game, placing the world of Silent Hill into a first-person arcade shooter seems off to me. I mean, here you have a subject normally filled to the brim with a gripping storyline and tense atmosphere and somehow Konami thought it would be a good idea to make it an iPod Touch game. I know there was that arcade version of Silent Hill, but is that basically what this is?

Oh, don’t forget Apple fanboys, Macworld starts this Tuesday (January 6, 2008) and despite no keynote from the man himself (Steve Jobs), I’m sure they will have something worth announcing. *crosses fingers* Come on Macbook Nano...

MIT students create AudiOdyssey, a musical game for the blind

by Jeremy Hill on Jan 4, 2009 at 06:42 PM

AudiOdyssey screen shotIt’s good to see someone working on games for those who are disabled in some way.

The Singapore M.I.T. Gambit Game Lab’s main goal is to make games that can be distributed globally from the start instead of producing games from one continent, then later translating them for other continents. A student named Eitan Glinert thought it would be a good idea to make a game catered to people who are visually impaired for his Master’s thesis.

Along with the help of seven other students and a professor, the team created a game called AudiOdyssey that allows the blind to play alongside with those who can see.

The game can be played with either a….

How the World of Goo became one of the indie video game hits of 2008

by Danielle Riendeau on Jan 3, 2009 at 11:42 PM

World of Goo
In this climate of uncertainty and bad news all over the industry, it’s nice to hear a cindarella story. Venturebeat has a great article up on one such story - a behind the scenes look at making The World of Goo, a cheapie indie game (made by two guys) that sold beautifully, even claiming the Number 1 spot (for PC games) on Amazon (sure, that was short lived, but quite a feat nonetheless).
