Nintendo’s most embarrassing moments at E3 2008

by Danielle Riendeau on Jul 20, 2008 at 08:16 AM

Nintendo E3 2008
Did you watch Nintendo’s E3 conference? Then you probably cringed a few times. The Minus World has an awesome list of the top five most embarrassing moment’s of Nintendo’s press event, including Cammie Dunaway’s tales of snowboarding woe and the awkward moments of silence from the crowd at each “big announcement”. The funniest of the moments happens at number two, aptly titled: “Nobody Knew How To Actually Control Anything”:

“Reggie demoed a jet ski mini game by waving his arms wildly and erratically steering like a kamikaze alcoholic stunt car driver and we were left more confused than informed. Next time hire somebody who actually plays video games to, you know, actually play your video game.”

Nice. I have to say, I thought the most embarrassing moment was Reggie’s statement that he was “The Regginator” but I suppose that was funny (or crazy) enough to qualify as “awesome” instead of ‘embarrassing”. Oh well. Check out the list for the rest - with a few wonderful pictures to illustrate the hilarity.

During last night’s E3 2008 Nintendo Developer Roundtable where games like Animal Crossing, Wii Music and Wii Sports Resort were being presented, a sudden and off-topic question informed all of the return of a familiar title.  During the presentation, an audience member had to have his or her Pikmin fix, and asked if another game would eventually be made.  To the surprise of many, Shigeru Miyamoto, casually confirmed that a new Pikmin game is being made…

Players with both games will be able to transfer their characters and possessions to the Wii version of the game, if they so desire.

Allegedly, people will be able to use DS units and Animal Crossing: Wild World to transfer Animal Crossing: City Folk data to a friend’s Wii.

Konami press conference recap

by Kenneth on Jul 16, 2008 at 11:59 PM

gamertell konami logoIf I could use a phrase to describe Konami’s press conference (2:30 p.m. PT, Wednesday, July 16, 2008) it would be, “ It started with a bang and ended with a thud.”

Konami already had a solid lineup to unveil to the masses with two new Castlevania games and Silent Hill: Homecoming and were well on their way to being the bright spot when it came to third party pressers for the event.  The conference began with news about Metal Gear Online and the new Elebits for the DS.

From that point on we got some great information, gameplay and demos from the Castlevania and Silent Hill franchises and then not so much.  Rock Revolution premiered last as Senior Product Manager, Lauren Facadomo, brought her all-girl cover band to play The Ramones, Blitzkrieg Pop.  Talk about bad Joey, Dee Dee, and Johnny Ramon are all spinning in their graves right now.  It only got worst from there.

Click for the bullet-point recap of the conference…

E3’s biggest games: WiiMusic

by Danielle Riendeau on Jul 16, 2008 at 05:31 PM

Wii Music
Nintendo’s biggest reveal at the end of Yesterday’s E3 press conference was the announcement of Wii Music, a super casual, family-friendly approach to what’s surely become one of the hottest genres in the industry. Miyamoto himself demonstrated the game, which has players mimicking the motions of over 50 different instruments without the usual pressure of note charts or complex actions.

Nintendo is really going for “everyone can play” accessibility here, according to the press release:

“It’s easy to play improv jams. Musicians in your band jam by simply playing their instruments to the beat of a song or by improvising to their heart’s content. Play faster. Play slower. Skip a beat, or throw in 10 more. No matter what you do, Wii Music automatically transforms your improv stylings into great music. There are no mistakes, just playing for the pure joy of playing...Wii Music offers virtually endless ways to make music. You choose the song and instruments and decide whether to blaze through a rock take on classical songs, put a jazzy spin on folk tunes or transform Nintendo classics like the Super Mario Bros. theme into Latin-flavored numbers. The song list is only a takeoff point - it’s how you improvise with the songs that matters.
