Homebrew Smash Bros DS being developed
Since Nintendo has been lax in providing a portable version of its legendary fighting game Smash Brothers, fans are taking the matter in their own hands. A German man known as Fuzzy is working on Super Smash Bros Rumble. The first demo of the game was released July 1, 2008 and is 873kb.
The YouTube video of Super Smash Bros Rumble gameplay gives an idea of how the demo of the game works. A user boots up the game, chooses the single player Solo mode and then begins fighting as Mario against another Mario. Everything looks very polished and the characters look good so far. The menu screen also shows a Wi-Fi button, indicating that future updates of the game may include either local Wi-Fi or maybe even Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection support.

The R4 team won’t support fake R4 carts
The team behind the R4 slot one flashcarts think piracy is wrong. Well, at least when it effects them. They’ve had enough with knock-off R4 flashcarts, and have decided that, after September 15, 2008, they will change the programing in the R4 kernels so they will only work on official R4 carts.
Let’s say you already own a fake R4 cartridge. Well, you better not update the firmware for it after September 15. The new update will not only not work with the fake card, it will also turn your DS into a very expensive brick. R4’s development team has issued a firm statement that owners of the fake carts who ignore their warnings and render their DS units useless will have to complain to the shop they purchased the fake cart from.
Zero Punctuation goes strangely meta
I know that everyone and their dog seems to write a blog post about Zero Punctuation every week, but this is different. Yahtzee, the motor-mouthed misanthrope who hilariously reviews games every week on the escapist; has turned his sights to webcomics. In the video, he brutally dissects the tropes of the gaming webcomic (and the entire culture of game humor, really) while maintaining a sort of ironic stance.

Beat summer’s heat with Venture Arctic
I don’t know about people in other parts of the US, but Chicago’s already seen quite a few days in the upper 80s. It looks like a blazing summer is coming, which makes a game like Venture Arctic all the more welcome. Brighter Minds Media, who brought us Pocketwatch Games’ Venture Africa, is now bringing us Pocketwatch’s next game, Venture Arctic.
Players of Venture Arctic get to create an arctic, Alaskan tundra ecosystem populated with 22 species of animals. They will also have to carefully protect their tundras, determining the amounts of snow and ice, the condition of the areas and the health of their creatures.
Aeria brings Dreamlords: The Reawakening to North America
Aeria Games has quite an impressive library of free-to-play massive multiplayer online (MMO) games. But there’s been one area where its lacking - real-time strategic rpgs. That’s where Dreamlords: The Reawakening steps in. Lockpick Entertainment’s Dreamlords will now be available for North American residents to play, thanks to Aeria.
Dreamlords: The Reawakening is a lot like Starcraft or Age of Empires - players wage strategic battles against one another. The difference with Dreamlords is that, like with all MMOs, the game keeps going when you’re not there. So players are given the opportunity to dictate their orders ahead of time, while they are playing. In fact, they can even issue directives from anywhere, so long as they have access to a computer with a browser and internet. They won’t be able to experience everything without downloading the program, but they can keep up-to-date on events and issue orders.
Cut/Scenes: A new Resident Evil
News broke this week that Resident Evil writer/director/producer extraordinaire Paul W.S. Anderson wouldn’t be opposed to making a fourth chapter in the film series. According to MTV’s Multiplayer blog, he’s been in talks with Sony about the possibility of making zombie magic happen yet again.
From the post:
“Right now, the hold up for Anderson is coming up with the right story. If that falls into place, another “Resident Evil” movie may be on the table.”
Just in case the film does get made, I have a few suggestions for the filmmakers…
Play PC games with wireless Stix controllers
GoLive2 will be releasing the Wiimote-esque Stix PC controllers in August, 2008. The Stix controllers look, and function, much like the Wii’s wiimote controller. It has a built in motion sensor to register movements and actions, and a touch screen interface for more complicated games. So instead of struggling with keyboard or mouse based controls, people can wave a remote at their PCs.
There are two different Stix models. The Stix 200 works primarily with 2D games you can play for free online. The Stix 400 is more comprehensive, as it can handle the online 2D online games and (supposedly) official “Games for Windows” games. A Stix 100 model is also shown on the official site, but the product depiction and description makes it sound like it could be Stix 200, only for kids.
Concerto Gate is a free MMO from Square Enix? Inconceivable!
Seriously, is this my Square Enix? The same company that charges me $40 for a DS game? Wow. I’m floored. Square Enix and GamesCampus.com are bringing the free, massive multiplayer online RPG Concerto Gate to North America. The closed beta for Concerto Gate started yesterday (July 1, 2008), and will run until July 14, 2008. Hopefully shortly after that, an open beta period will be held.
Concerto Gate sounds like your typical, fantasy MMO. People come to the enchanted land of Fahren and level grind in an attempt to become the prophesized hero who’ll save everyone. Like every MMO, Concerto Gate has a unique feature to set it apart - terra generating. Over the course of weeks and months, players will be able to alter the game’s landscape. Pretty neat.
