Playstation Network cards coming to a chain near you
The Playstation Network (PSN) has been offering downloadable games ever since it launched a couple years ago. Unlike its console competitors, however, there was no way to purchase games and services without using a credit or debit card.
Japan has been using PSN cards for a while now and people in North America have been waiting with zen-like patience for the cards to find their way across the ocean. Even though you may find PSN cards scattered about the country in the strangest places, Sony has announced that major chains including Blockbuster, 7-Eleven and…
Mirror’s Edge to offer time trials
Mirror’s Edge looks better and better every time it’s shown. 1up has just revealed that the game will offer a time trial mode, with levels unlocked throughout the course of the single-player game. From the post: “Producer Tom Ferrer explained to us that the time trial portions of Mirror’s Edge will be ‘bite-sized and short so you can grind them and play them and get faster and faster. It’s not like playing an entire level.’ Naturally, you’ll be able to upload your fastest time for each section to online leaderboards, and you can even download ghost data...”
The game is a perfect fit for this style of play, for going after that one perfect run. Mirror’s Edge is due out October 15, 2008 for the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC. Fans of gorgeous, platform-inspired gameplay will want to check it out.

Begin your story in La Tale’s open beta
OGPlanet’s latest free-to-play MMO, La Tale has just entered into the open beta phase. Its a fairly short open beta, however, lasting only until September 3, 2008. After that, the game will temporarily be closed down until September 18, 2008, the official launch date. MapleStory fans may want to take note, as La Tale also looks to be a customizable, adorable, MMORPG with a 2D perspective and active battles.
La Tale is designed to be an active MMORPG with easy controls, customizeable characters and quests that are easy to accomplish. You design an avatar that is a warrior, knight, wizard or explorer who is trying to uncover Stones of Iris and learn Iris Livier’s while journeying across different lands and fighting monsters. I have to say, it looks adorable…
Angels Online’s first expansion, The Lost Atlantis, launches soon
Angels Online, IGG.com’s free-to-play, cute/scary (Well - I think the characters look scary) massive multiplayer RPG (MMORPG)’s first expansion, The Lost Atlantis is about to be released, and events are being held to celebrate it. The event, called New Edition, will run from August 28, 2008 until September 1, 2008, is designed to help players level up and prepare for the new region that will be added in the Lost Atlantis expansion.
There are four basic perks to this Angels Online event. The first is that all double experience cards will now give players triple the experience. The second is that speedup effect cards will make characters even faster than normal. Virgo Lucky bags will also contain Flame Arena tickets during the event, which will allows users to visit the Flame Arena to train. Pets’ Exp Stones limit will also be doubled. If you’re a casual Angels Online player, August 28-September 1 might be the time to really put in some effort and level up your character…
Wii Virtual Console/WiiWare update for August 25 - September 1, 2008
What’s this? A week of Wii-downloadables that sounds decent all around? And in the dog days of August, even. This week, we have a funky looking rhythm game on WiiWare, along with some retro RPG action (Ys Book 1&2) and the ass-kicking Samurai Shodown 2. As usual, the titles are available on the Wii Shop channel, with a fresh batch arriving every Monday at 9 AM Pacific time. Wii points can be purchased at a rate of $1=100 points.
Mabinogi Generation 3’s first season has begun
A new season of Mabinogi has begun, and you know what that means - new items, new quests, new additions and new events. Generation 3 Season 1 (G3S1) kicked off August 21, 2008, and brought with it a slew of new material to enhance Nexon’s free-to-play massive multiplayer online (MMO) game. Two new Masters events, G3 Mainstream Masters and Battle Masters were also announced.
The changes to Mabinogi make the game more appealing with both cosmetic and gameplay additions. Eight new premium character eye and mouth choices were added, more skill shortcut keys were added and new pets are available for purchase in the premium shop. The pet system and pet’s AI have been updated, battle skills no longer have level caps and characters can get married. Of course there are also new story quests, for those who wish to pay for service…
Playstation Store Update for the week of August 21-27, 2008
This week has been a little more quiet at the Playstation Store. The main attraction is Ratchet & Clank Future: Quest for Booty, the first Playstation Network-exclusive title in the series but there’s few other little firecrackers worth taking.
Rock Band gets a bunch of Devo songs but lacks “Whip It” and I personally believe that fantasy football is the bad yaoi fanfiction of the hardcore sports fan set.
On a final note, in regards to the hooplah over The Force Unleashed, (and I say this as someone who foolishly battles the Internet Hive Mind and very much enjoyed the Special Edition and prequel Star Wars movies) am I alone in thinking the franchise has run it’s course and should be given a very, perhaps eternal, rest?
Anyway, here’s this week’s update list…
Fallout 3 available October 28, 2008
Get your radiation meds ready. Bethesda has announced the official release date for the hotly anticipated Fallout 3 - October 28, 2008. European gamers will be able to traverse the game’s barren, nuclear-scarred terrain on October 31st (just in time for Halloween!).

Lego Batman gets a little girl power from Batgirl
Today (August 19, 2008) Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment revealed the latest “good guy” in the upcoming Lego Batman game: Batgirl. According to the company press release, she has a “unique style of justice” as a crime fighter alongside Batman and Robin (though she’s not really a part of the boy’s club, pity). She’s also secretly Commissioner Gordon’s daughter, and can use all of Batman’s funky suits.
So, does anyone think the Lego Batman game will pick up sales from where EA dropped the ball on the canned Dark Knight game? I’m sure we’ll find out this fall. The game ships for just about every imaginable platform on September 23, 2008.
