ATI’s XGP external graphics solutions for laptops

by Jonathan Gronli on Jul 13, 2008 at 11:37 AM

ATI Radeon logoFor gamers on the go there is a bit of a problem. Laptops don’t really allow much in the way of upgrades, especially with the graphics cards. However, ATI announced that it is developing the first external graphics cards for people who dabble heavily with multimedia and graphics.

The ATI XGP will have to be connected to a laptop via PCIe 2.0 port connection and will take a laptop from everyday computing to hardcore gaming capabilities. To start,…

by PJ Hruschak on Jun 16, 2008 at 10:31 PM

gamertell visteon dockable entertainment system game boy advance pamphlet coverI contacted Visteon to get an update on its Dockable Entertaiment device with a built-in Game Boy Advance system.

To my pleasant surprise, not only did they confirm that the GBA version of the system is still available to be installed in vehicles but that the company is also looking into a DS and/or Wii version. Here’s the official response from a Visteon Corporate Communications representative…

Visteon’s dockable multimedia player, GBA system still kickin’

by PJ Hruschak on Jun 14, 2008 at 11:36 AM

gamertell visteon dockable entertainment system game boy advance pamphlet coverMy wife was getting an oil change the other day and my baby gamer wandered into the dealership’s Videogame Room. Kudos to them for providing such a room. Sadly, it only has a slimline PS2 and four games (I think I saw Madden NFL 2002 in there).

But, there was a countertop pamphlet display with good ‘ol Mario on it. The pamphlets are for Visteon’s “Dockable Entertainment featuring Game Boy Advance.” It’s essentially a portable DVD player intended for your car with a GBA built right in…

Panasonic unveils Wii-proof Plasma TVs

by Pulkit Chandna on Feb 20, 2008 at 04:48 PM

Panasonic
The flying, slippery Wii-mote has accounted for many broken TV sets. So, just like the Wii, even protective Wii-mote straps have been in huge demand. But imagine if your TV was strong enough to withstand any Wii-mote strikes, you could then indulge in your favorite Wii games wholeheartedly without worrying about accidentally damaging your expensive TV. Panasonic has unveiled a new line of plasma TVs that are Wii-proof.

Panasonic exhibited its upcoming products at its HD Networking Conference in Valencia, Spain and the Wii-proof plasmas were among the products showcased. Panasonic claims that the plasmas can resist up to 4 joules of energy, which is enough to protect it from a flying Wii-mote unless it is purposely thrown with great force.

It does make sense to take all precautionary measures you need to protect your TV from a Wii-mote’s fury. In case, you are looking to buy a plasma TV then do give the new Panasonic plasmas a thought. However, there is no need for you to bid farewell to your old TV and specially opt for the Wii-proof ones, instead buy a protective strap for the Wii-mote.

Little Nemo: The Dream Master cross stitch

by Jenni Lada on Feb 17, 2008 at 11:30 PM

Everybody loves candy

Growing up, owning a NES was a big deal, and every game became part of a treasured memory. This is, in part, what drew me to Little Nemo: The Dream Master for my second video game cross stitch. For my second cross stitch I wanted to do a slightly larger cross stitch, but at the same time go back to a classic system. So I headed over to The Shyguy Kingdom and picked out some sprites from the game to create a pattern. I always loved how Nemo could become different animals or fuse with them by tossing candy at them, so I wanted to incorporate that into the cross stitch.

Angel Kirby cross stitch

by Jenni Lada on Feb 13, 2008 at 01:50 PM

Angel Kirby

Here he is, straight from Kirby Squeak Squad to cross stitch, angel Kirby. I recently decided to try my hand at cross stitching sprites, with the familiar pink blob as my test subject. I used one of the images from the Spite Database, enlarged it with Microsoft Paint, and then started working on bringing Kirby to life.

The whole project took a total of about an hour and a half to two hours. I wasn’t really keeping track and didn’t actually expect to finish the entire piece in one sitting - I started around 8pm because I was bored, and I was finished before the end of Boston Legal. His feet feature two different shades of magenta, his body has three different shades of pink, his wings and halo contain two shades of yellow and white and of course there is a black border around his body.

Am I getting old or is game text getting smaller?

by PJ Hruschak on Jan 23, 2008 at 08:12 AM

gamertell halo text physical comparison

If my eyes are getting worse, I might have to blame game developers and publishers. No, I’m not sitting too close to the TV while gaming (10 feet away, thank you). Instead, the in-game text is getting smaller and more difficult to read.

Case in point: I physically measured the word “CAMPAIGN” in Halo, Halo 2 and Halo 3 on the same TV being played through the Xbox 360. Yes, I took a measuring tape and pressed it against a TV screen.

The word “CAMPAIGN” appears in the menu of all three games in the franchise and should be indicative of the menu text used throughout each game. In each case it is white on a dark background and written in all caps.

Wii-inspired WaveScape to bring games to ads

by Pulkit Chandna on Jan 15, 2008 at 08:46 AM

WaveScape in action The Wii has revolutionized the world of home consoles with its highly interactive motion-sensing controllers. Now, a Wii-inspired system might change the face of the advertising industry.

This new game system called WaveScape was unveiled at the recently concluded Consumer Electronic Show. The technology is supposed to make advertising displays more immersive by offering interactive game content. The device, developed by Reactrix Systems, has sophisticated motion sensors allowing anyone to play video games on advertising displays using body movements.

This game system is not restricted to advertising displays but is also compatible with LCD TVs. Matt Bell, the chief scientist at Reactrix, made it clear during the product launch that the first application of this new technology was going to be “advertising and interactive signage.” Reactrix plans to make the game system public with its launch across 150 Hilton hotels during the second half of 2008. The system will not only provide the hotel visitors with riotously fun games but also interactive information.

WaveScape’s capabilities were demonstrated on an imposing Samsung large-format 570DX display. During the demonstration Matt Bell stood in front of the gargantuan display and knocked-out a Panda in a round of boxing, with every bare-fisted punch being recorded by a motion sensing device attached to the Samsung display. Then he and another bloke played a game of volleyball.

Alienware’s DLP RPTV is a wicked awesome curved screen

by PJ Hruschak on Jan 10, 2008 at 10:10 PM

gamertell alienware curved screen ces 2008

At CES 2008 (January 7-10, 2008) Alienware was representin’ with an uber wide format monitor running a modified version of Crysis. The prototype Alienware DLP RPTV is a 42-inch wraparound monitor with 2880x900 resolution and is curved inward to allow for peripheral vision.

The screen uses OLEDs (organic light emitting diodes) and can be used with any ol’ computer software. Of course, some of your stuff might be a bit warped if it isn’t adapted to be used on such an uber wide format.

There is no official release date for this monitor but it’ll likely carry a huge Alienware style price tag. Reports from the floor also indicated that the screen seemed a little washed out and had a couple vertical lines, indicating it might actually be multiple monitors in one housing.
